Though Tennessee winters are typically mild with cool temperatures and some snowfall, 2022 has started with a wintry bang. This year, many parts of the state have been hit with heavy snow from multiple winter storms. The winter weather can cause many hazards, including dangerous road conditions.
According to the Tennessean, the Jan. 6, 2022, snowstorm caused treacherous travel for drivers, with police in many hard-hit areas urging residents not to travel if it was not necessary. The Tennessee Highway Patrol reported 184 wrecks in the Nashville district alone in the early morning. As the winter season continues, Tennesseans need to keep in mind the following safe winter vehicle maintenance and driving tips.
Winter Vehicle Maintenance
Make sure to check the following things on your car before the next winter storm to ensure it’s ready to go:
-
Car battery—The colder weather can make it harder for your car battery to perform. Be sure to test your car battery to ensure it’s working properly.
-
Tire type—It may be beneficial to swap your tires for winter tires, depending on the type of car you drive. Winter tires can help give your vehicle better traction while driving in the elements.
-
Tire pressure—Regardless of the type of tire you have, you should check your tire pressure as the temperatures drop. The cold air often makes the tire pressure drop, which may make it more dangerous to drive in icy or snowy conditions.
Other winter vehicle maintenance tips to consider are checking wiper blades for wear and tear, adding antifreeze to your wiper fluids, and packing a winter emergency kit.
Winter Driving Safety Tips
In addition to making sure your car is ready for the winter weather, it’s essential to drive with caution in wintry conditions. Here are some simple tips to keep in mind:
-
Slow down. In icy and snowy conditions, it’s important to slow down to help avoid losing control of your vehicle. Additionally, slower temperatures are often safer if visibility is poor.
-
Increase your distance. The dangerous road conditions may make it difficult to stop, which is why you should increase the distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you.
-
Avoid sudden movements. Accelerating or braking suddenly can cause you to lose control on the roads. When starting or stopping, do so gradually. The same can be said for switching lanes or using on and off-ramps, as well as turn lanes.
-
Clear off your car before heading out. Removing the snow and ice from your vehicle before driving can help you see better and keep other drivers safe.
If you aren’t comfortable driving in the winter conditions and you don’t have to leave your home, consider staying at home until the weather passes and the roads are clear.
